14. Super quick little charging shelf job.
The rear pillars have been semi-carpeted for ages now, and I've finally finished them. I'm going to be honest- it's waaaaay harder then they make it look on YouTube, and if I ever get the money in the future, I'll definitely get a pro to redo it down the track. But as long as you don't look too close it's done for now.
You can see above the rear pillars, lives a fibreglass shelf that is part of the monocoque roof structure. It doesn't have enough clearance to use as a bookshelf, and that's OK. Because I've had something else in mind for a while now, and I can finally solve that problem.
Being right above me in the bunk area, it will be the perfect spot to put my laptop/iPad/phone/Bluetooth headphones and whatever else in to charge at night. There is already power up there (I need to disguise that orange power cord at some point!), all it needs is some headliner carpet on the bottom to protect whatever I'm putting up there, and a paint job. Let's paint it.
Because it's interior, I don't mind using water based paint for this. There's a Dulux store across the road, so I bought a cheap test pot of the darkest grey they have. I went with that colour because I don't want to overdose on black in there, and because I feel like it's a nice compromise between the faux walnut ceiling and the black headliner. Also, far from looking industrial, it's quite a classy looking, luxe colour.
I masked off the headliner and applied it with a brush. The brush left lines, but once they dried (2 coats) it had a woodgrain vibe, so I left it as is instead of block sanding it and applying more coats until it sat perfectly flat.
Here it is dry, and here's a closer look:
I haven't decided if I will paint the fibreglass behind it where the power switch is or not. I'll sit on it for now, and if I decide to darken it, I'll add it to this post. I do feel like having it stay creamy white isn't a bad thing though. It will help to reflect ambient light, so it's not a dark pokey hole. We'll see...
